We're Team Roger Lowa - Welcome to our Adventures!

Team Roger Lowa: Scout, Barking Betty, Babbles, & Cap
Welcome to the official new blog for Team Roger Lowa. We are four sibling (more or less) hiker-campers who formed a bond (that actually goes far beyond hiking), and named ourselves after a T-shirt and a brand of hiking boots. If that sounds weird, well just wait until you get to know us!

You can learn all about our origin if you click on the "Meet Team Roger Lowa" page link to the right, but the condensed version goes something like this:

CAST OF CHARACTERS:

Cap:  aka Jan "If a Guy Wanted to Get in Another Mile" Selvig. The oldest and probably wisest team member who is, according to Betty's brother Kevin, "in phenomenal shape." He's the permanently designated travel coordinator and belongs to...

Babbles (Babs): aka Lizbeth "My Technology Doesn't Work Again" Selvig. Second oldest and shortest member and the the one who never stops talking (hence Babbles). Also the one who writes most of the blogs. She is sister of...

Scout: aka Pete "I Walk and Notice Sh**" Feuk. The youngest but tallest of Babs' three brothers who has special carrying cases/bags for every piece of hiking and camping equipment he owns, and who never looks at a map but always finds the right path. He is the fiance of...

Barking Betty (Betty): aka Tami "I'm Fine Everything's Fine" Richey. The youngest member of the team and our self-titled princess who, until six years ago, had never hiked a single trail but is now so experienced she can scramble on scree and face high altitudes better than most. We don't ever explain the "barking."

But who is Roger Lowa?

One day, we found and then all ordered these T-shirts. There was no plan to take this sloth hiking team thing to heart, but...weird, remember? And, of course, our sloth needed a name, which he told us was Roger, but with no last name. The choice was obvious to us: we all wear the same brand of boots--Lowa--made in Slovakia (which isn't why we love them but is nice because Cap is of that persuasion).

Roger ...

 + Lowas = Roger Lowa

During six years, give or take, of hiking together, and three years of having an official name, Team Roger has had a lot of great hiking adventures.  We've hiked every one of the 72 state parks and recreation areas in our home state of Minnesota and also found local regional parks that are beautiful and challenging. We've done quite a bit of trekking through Rocky Mountain National Park and plan to visit many more places in the National Park system. But our next adventure is a biggie and a trip that's been in the works since 2019.

One foot after another
After waiting out Covid with three postponements, in one month we are   heading for Scotland and England! Not only will we be sightseeing in the big places like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, and London, but the heart of the trip will be an 80-mile hike along the Rob Roy Way--the eastern side of the Highlands. This is the point of our True Adventures blog: keeping a (b)log of our crazy, wonderful trip for ourselves, family, and friends old and new. If we're lucky, maybe we can inspire someone else to take a chance on their own dream adventure.
Cap and Betty after a high & narrow crossing

We invite you to follow along as we use our last month to get into hard-body (slight coughing) hiking condition and make our final decisions on what the heck to pack for nearly four weeks of travel.

If we can keep Babs' phone (technology) working; if all Cap's reservations are waiting for us; if Betty doesn't get spirited away by Scottish midges; and if Scout can find the paths even when our maps get drowned by inevitable Highland rain---we should have some great stories for you! So check back here often and see how we're doing.

Next time on The True Adventures of Team Roger Lowa: a look at how four hikers representing three decades train for an 80-mile trek without crying.
